FoRB and Human Rights
FoRB and Human Rights
The basic principles underlying human rights apply equally to freedom of religion or belief. These rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated. They are the same for everyone everywhere, cannot be separated from each other, are connected to each other and the fulfillment of one right is dependent on the fulfillment of other rights.
Although Freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) is recognized as a key human right, the complex nature of religion and belief has resulted in fewer definitive agreements on its application. For example, Article 18 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights has not been elaborated upon and codified in the same way that more detailed treaties have codified prohibitions against torture, discrimination against women, and race discrimination.
